1812 and 2012 are compact RO membrane element formats commonly used in household water purifiers and small water-treatment equipment. The first two digits describe the approximate diameter in inches and the final two digits describe the nominal length. An 1812 element is approximately 1.8 inches in diameter and 12 inches long; a 2012 element is approximately 2.0 inches in diameter and 12 inches long.
The practical difference is diameter and membrane area
The 2012 format has a larger diameter than the 1812 format. In a system designed for it, the additional diameter can provide room for more membrane area and therefore a higher nominal production rating. However, an element is not interchangeable simply because it has the same length. The pressure vessel, end connections, pump, flow restrictor, pretreatment and system control must all be suitable for the selected format.

Published model data should be compared at the same conditions
OVAY’s household product catalog lists OV-ULP1812-50 at 50 GPD, OV-ULP1812-75 at 75 GPD and OV-ULP2012-100 at 100 GPD. These models are listed with 97.5% stabilized desalination at the stated conditions: 60 psi test pressure, 500 ppm NaCl feed solution, 25 C feed temperature and approximately 50% recovery.
Those figures are a basis for comparison, not a promise that every installation will produce the same volume. Higher inlet TDS, lower temperature, inadequate pressure, ageing pretreatment components and excessive recovery can all reduce observed production. Conversely, higher pressure or warmer feed water can increase flow while affecting other operating constraints.
How to choose between 1812 and 2012
Use the pressure vessel format specified by the equipment design. If you are developing a new purifier, select the membrane format after considering target capacity, vessel space, pump curve, flow restriction, intended feed water and service strategy. Do not force a larger element into a vessel made for another diameter, and do not make a purchasing decision based on a product image or nominal GPD value alone.
Check the operating limits
For the compact OV-ULP 1812 and 2012 family, the catalog lists water sources below 500 ppm TDS and the following key limits: maximum operating pressure 300 psi, maximum feed temperature 45 C, maximum inlet SDI15 5, free chlorine below 0.1 ppm and a maximum 10 psi pressure drop per element. Good pretreatment is essential, especially for sources with turbidity, oxidants, hardness or biological contamination.
